A man accused of strangling his pregnant 14-year-old girlfriend nearly four years ago on the South Side has confessed to the crime after the Chicago Police Cold Case Squad hunted him down in Texas, officials say.
Raul Tijerina, 35, is scheduled to return to Chicago on Friday to face charges of first-degree murder and homicide of an unborn fetus, said Chicago Police Sgt. Joseph Salemme.
Tijerina allegedly beat up and strangled Sonya Garcia during an argument. Her body was found on July 9, 2000, in an apartment she shared with Tijerina in the 4700 block of South Throop.
An informant tipped Cold Case detectives Michael Mason and Richard Milz that Tijerina was living in Texas were he was arrested.
